This is a video tutorial on maximizing DPS as a retribution paladin. Ret pally rotation, buffs, stack monitoring and priority of abilities according to range are discussed in this video.
Maximizing DPS as a Retribution Paladin
Published: March 25, 2010Posted in: Ret Pally Articles, Videos

Heya friend, far as I’m concerned, this is fantastic….what you have put together, was doing a search for wow gadgets and found you, nice:)
I have been a tank forever, but have 2 set tier 9 and 10,was always wondering why I would be high in dps and low sometimes, now the noob in me realizes, its the diff. stacks that I was not watching:)
I have the libram macros but was not using them perfectly, also think I may make 2 diff. bar rotations with bartender, right beside each other, one for multi and one for single targets.
Thanx again

Hey, I’m glad that I could help out. Another thing to think about that I’ve found to be helpful is, as a tank, Seal of Command is better for dps on mass pulls. However, if you are not expertise capped without Glyph of Seal of Vengeance, this will cause SoC to suffer and Seal of Vengeance will be better because you are not expertise capped without it. If you have any questions regarding tanking, please don’t hesitate to ask!
Fellow paladin, i would like to make some considerantions on your vid, and i hope u dont get them the wrong way.
1- As u may know libram of truths turns to be the best libram after aroun 42 seconds of fight, making it better for putricide, no discord, since there is really no way u will stay more than 15 seconds without hitting crusader strike in this fight (of course u will in transition fase, but fase 1, 2 and 3 take more than 42 seconds to be finished, making it a better option overall. Another fact in this fight is that seal of vengeance has proved himself better than any other, speacially if u position urself skillfully when the green blight explodes, making it trow u at putricide and not letting u lose ur vengeance stacks.
2- a) single target rotation – once u have 4t10 bonus crusader strike turns out more important than hammer of wrath, the math has been done at the EJ forums, more than once. that would be a good point to be talked about in ur vid, since the rotation you show is actually the better one if u have only 2 t10 pieces.
b) multy target rotation – Consacrate turns ou to be your second most powerfull skill once u reach 4hitting mobs, the dmg is devastating, it will dump ur mana badly, but if u can control that, and if we are talking about maximizing DPS consacrate cannot be left as it is in your comments, it turn extremely powerfull in big waves of trash and even in situations like valithra adds, it turns out to be extremely important to be used correctly. Thats the same for holy wrath, if undead.
3- you concil people to use avanging wrath at any time once tree truths buff is complete, it would be cool if talk about trinket procs also (usually the second proc is the best moment 45 after the beggining of the fight), wich is usually the best time to use AW. but going down that path requires an analisys of each fight. i would not go that far in a single vid, but its worth mentioning.
a personal advice – if you dont use an addon to check your trinkets internal CDS and procs, it would be a good idea, i myself use fortex.
Your vid is great, but i feel like this little disagrees should be taken into account
i would like to say im sorry about my bad english, its not my natural lenguage, but i guess i can make myself clear.
Thank you so much for your help! Everything you say here makes sense and was well researched. I really like the part about positioning ones self in a way to let the slimes through you to putricide. I have talked to a few people about the seal for Putricide. I understand that a lot of people like to use SoV however, because of SoR with a Glyph in SoR is better for burst damage, and not having to wait for stacks to build, I’ve found it to be a better seal. My main focus for this fight was on burrning the adds down because it seems that most problems come from them not going down in time in a 25 man raid. Especially if there are adds still up in the Tear Gas Phase. However, that is obviously due to a situation when the raid group is not performing at optimum levels or the strategy is such that the adds take too long to down. In which case, the stacks of vengeance would wear off. In an ideal situation, you are correct. SoV would be the better choice providing that one could keep stacks up.
I didn’t go into full details about the rotations because as you are aware, there are many rotations listed in EJ that depend on what gear you are using at the time. To go into detail about the rotations would actually require a video all to itself. You are correct in what you say. However when I made this video I was keeping in mind that most people at the time were lucky to have 2 t10 and 2 t9, so I set the rotation as such. If you listen to the video, I do state that it is with a two piece t10 bonus!
I actually pulled the rotations from the 3.2 retribution guide from EJ. With consecrate, do you have some data sheet I can look at to show me numbers for consecrate? It would be nice to see something like that so that I can understand why that is. Regarding Holy Wrath, the reason that I don’t like to put that high on priority is that it was a great way to stun mobs that you might have pulled from the tank, and the dps is pretty much included in your total numbers after the fight is finished. Unless one is using the Glyph which halves the cool down time, in which case, it should be higher on priority.
It is difficult to say what is good for people overall, because gear, skill and knowledge is different for everyone, and it is constantly changing. People grow, their characters gear up and the things they needed once, become less important with the evolution of their characters.
I will definitely look into fortex. That just might be a video in itself!
I am truly grateful for your help and bringing these things to my attention. I will post this on the website, and let the readers decide what they think is best for them. At the very least, you have made the information available to others. Hopefully some will try both ways and someone will come up with some feedback!
PS, don’t worry about the English. Most people here in the states only speak English, and don’t consider the fact that English is a very difficult language to learn. But if you were to ask them to speak Chinese, they’d be clueless.
I hope to hear more from you!
Hey just wanted to know what your build was like maybe put up a talent build up because i followed a pre-made build which was ret but it didnt have SoC so I wanna know exactly what you use so I can maxmize my dps
Thanks by the way your video is byfar the best out there thank you for taking your time!
Thanks for the kind words. I believe in the tanking article, Balancing your gear and spec for DPS tanking, you can find a link to my armory. My ret tree is in there as well.
Hope this helps.
thanks for answering so quickly i found it
1 more question on your action bar which attack is the 8th key the first aid icon, and the = key
other than your libram macros do you use any other ones?
thanks
Hey, I took a look at your armory. For starters you are way over the hit cap. You have 600+hit. Instead of your trinkets which both have hit, I would suggest getting yourself some better trinkets like Darkmoon Card of Greatness: Strength and Death’s Verdict or Whispering Fang Skull if you can. Also try to get your expertise to cap if you can. Aside from that, you have no gear with set bonuses from what I can see. You unfortunately spent your badges on gear that would increase your gearscore more than it would your dps.
I would suggest you try for getting the 4 set bonus from T9 first, and then try to regear for t10, only swapping out when you have 2 pieces of t10 so you don’t break your 4set bonus without having something to compensate for the loss of the 4 set ability. Hope this helps.
how did you find my char?? my char name or any info relevant to it is not posted :S
The armory response was in reply to a different email. The first aid symbol is Hand of Sacrifice I believe. And the = sign is Seal of Command with a libram swapping macro.
I am old LOL and have a hell of a time trying to tell when my Libram of the three thuths, or Holy vendence, or what my Herkuni is at. What is the best way to “track” these so my eyes can actually see them and start maximizing my AW as much as possible, or triggering a macro?
I have read about and use CLCret, but have not had a easy time “setting up” much more than what is ‘default”.
Thanks for any help =)
sorry I cannot spell either “Vengence” =)
Thanks for the vids they are great. I am new to Pally DPS. I notice you talk alot about Hammer of Wrath in the rotations but doesnt it only kick in when a target is >20% health? How can i start of with it in my rotation? What am i missing? Thanks again.
Hammer of Wrath only comes in a 20% health. Basically use ones that are available at the time, and prioritize based on what will be more productive for your dps.
No worries. The reason why you can’t find the Libram of Three Truths or the Herkuml War Token is that these are items you have to purchase with Frost Badges from vendors. They are not paladin abilities, but gear that we use. Holy vengeance is a passive ability that procs when Seal of Vengeance is up. It procs each time you use a Judgement which is why judgements are so high on the priority list for rotation. Happy smashing.
